Imagine standing at a bus stand. Two buses approach — one empty, the other jam-packed.
Which one would you board?
Most people I’ve asked say they would choose the empty bus. But here’s the twist — the correct answer could be neither. You weren’t there to catch a bus at all. You were waiting to meet a friend.
In our financial journey, many people find themselves in the same situation. They take the wrong bus — or board one when it wasn’t necessary. Influenced by greed, fear, ignorance, and the constant noise from financial media, social media, finfluencers, bankers, and agents, they often make decisions that don’t align with their true needs.
The Right Approach
Every portfolio should be built around one’s financial goals, risk profile, and cash flows — not around the latest market buzz or product recommendation.
But what exactly are these financial goals?
Broadly, they include:
- Funding one’s retirement
- Providing for children’s education
- Achieving inflation-beating wealth growth
- Planning for wealth transfer
- Transition from non-resident to resident
- Ensuring regular income
- Optimizing taxes
- Managing liquidity
- Protecting cash flows
In short, reducing financial anxiety and securing peace of mind.
Yet, many investors today chase the next IPO, the next multi-bagger, or try to outperform their neighbour’s returns. If you find yourself doing the same, you’re like that person at the bus stand — lost and unsure of the destination.
The Way Forward
The solution is simple, though not always easy — identify and prioritize your financial goals, and then rebuild your portfolio accordingly.
If this feels confusing, seek guidance from a fee-only financial planner, whose sole commitment is to your financial well-being — not commissions or product sales.
After all, clarity about where you want to go is the first step toward reaching there.
