How much is Enough?

During one of our review meetings with a long-standing client in his mid-40s, he asked a simple but profound question:

"I have built a sizeable investment portfolio. Should I push harder in my profession? Should I accept an international posting?"

He wasn't asking about money. He was asking about life. Like many successful professionals, he was feeling the pressure of seeing his peers constantly aiming for the next promotion, the next role, or the next opportunity.

As financial planners, we don't have a definitive answer to such philosophical questions. But we shared our perspective.

Because he had been a disciplined investor for many years, he now had something invaluable—the freedom to choose.

He could pursue a more demanding career if it challenged and fulfilled him. Or he could slow down, spend more time with his family, and focus on other meaningful aspects of life.

Neither choice was financially wrong.

That ability to choose without being compelled by money is what we believe financial freedom truly means.

We suggested that if he decided to take on a more aggressive career path, it should be because it excites him, stretches his abilities, and aligns with his personal and family goals—not because he needs the additional income. Such decisions are best made after thoughtful discussions with one's spouse and loved ones.

This also raises a question each of us must answer for ourselves:

How much is enough?

There is no universal answer. It is deeply personal.

If you are working primarily for money, then build a disciplined financial strategy that helps you achieve financial freedom. Don't let short-term noise or comparisons with others distract you from your long-term goals. The day your financial portfolio can give an income replacing your current lifestyle expenses, you have achieved financial freedom.

If you are working because you genuinely enjoy what you do, then you have already crossed an important milestone. Continue working—not because you have to, but because you want to.

At Naveen Rego Capital, a fee-only financial planning firm and a SEBI Registered Investment Adviser, we help our clients build the confidence and financial security to make life choices based on purpose rather than necessity.

Our objective is simple: to help our clients work for the love of work—not because they have to work for money.

Are you on the path to financial freedom?
