Does Wealth Management mean invest in Direct Mutual Funds?

Recently, we were debating with one of our long-standing clients on the cost structure of our advisory process.

His argument was straightforward: "I can invest in direct mutual funds at very low expense ratios. Why should I pay advisory fees on top of that?"

It is a fair question.

Our response was equally simple. Wealth management is not merely about reducing costs. We focus on three critical aspects:

Lowering unnecessary expenses

• Improving tax efficiency

• Enhancing risk-adjusted returns

Looking only at fund expenses is like evaluating healthcare solely on the cost of medicines.

Consider this analogy.

Is it cheaper to buy medicines directly from a discount pharmacy or consult a qualified doctor first?

At first glance, skipping the doctor appears cheaper because you save the consultation fee. But that works only if you know the exact problem and the correct treatment.

A good doctor may charge a fee, but often helps arrive at the right diagnosis, avoid unnecessary medicines, reduce side effects, and prevent costly mistakes. Looking at the total outcome, the long-term cost may actually be lower.

Financial planning and Wealth management works in a similar manner.

The value of a professional advisor is not merely in selecting a low-cost product. It lies in

  1. Making unbiased decisions
  2. Avoiding behavioral mistakes
  3. Improving tax outcomes
  4. Managing risks
  5. Helping clients stay disciplined through market cycles.

Cost reduction is one component of our process.

The real objective is to protect and grow wealth in a thoughtful, tax-efficient, and unbiased manner.

The most successful client-advisor relationships are built with investors who evaluate advice not merely by its cost, but by the value it creates over decades.

Note: Investing in direct mutual funds reduces the annual brokerage paid to the mutual fund distributor. However, the recurring annual fund management expenses continue. Naveen Rego Capital, a fee only wealth management firm and a corporate SEBI Registered Investment Adviser, always suggests direct mutual funds (along with other suitable products) and charges a transparent fee based on the engagement model opted.

Happy Financial Planning!
