The Value of Good Financial Planning Advice

Recently, one of our prospective clients questioned our fee-only advisory model and the fees we charge. His simple question was:

“Will the financial benefits really outweigh the advisory fees?”

Our answer was straightforward — our role is not just investment selection. We coach, guide and handhold clients so they avoid costly financial mistakes and achieve better long-term outcomes.

But he still wasn’t fully convinced.

Like the old Maruti advertisement:

“Kitna mileage deti hai?”

So, my team and I decided to quantify the value.

For illustration purposes, let us assume the gentleman had a financial portfolio of Rs 2 crores (excluding real estate, gold jewellery and employer benefits). He belonged to the higher tax bracket and had one primary objective:

“Can I get better financial outcomes?”

Here is what we showed him:

1. Tax Efficiency

Rs 2 crores invested in Fixed Deposits at 6.5% p.a. generates approximately Rs 13 lakhs annually.

At a 30% tax bracket ( excluding cess and surcharges), the annual tax outgo is nearly Rs 3.9 lakhs.

Through better asset allocation and tax-efficient investing strategies, this tax burden can be meaningfully reduced over time.

2. Lower Product Costs

We recommend low-cost direct products wherever possible.

This alone can reduce annual product expenses by up to 1% p.a., translating to savings of nearly Rs 2 lakhs annually on a Rs 2 crore portfolio.

Even for investors already using direct products, our research-driven approach can potentially save at least 0.25% annually — approximately Rs 50,000 per year.

Additionally, we guide clients towards cost-efficient insurance structures thereby saving near about Rs 25,000 per annum.

3. Better Risk-Adjusted Returns

Our focus is not “highest returns” but “better returns relative to risk”.

With disciplined investing, proper asset allocation, behavioral coaching and long-term handholding, clients may potentially achieve superior long-term outcomes compared to traditional fixed-income portfolios.

For example:

A shift from 6.5% FD returns to a diversified equity-oriented portfolio delivering around 12% p.a. historically (not guaranteed) can create a significant long-term difference.

Even on a Rs 1 crore allocation, the additional return potential itself can be approximately Rs 5 lakhs annually over FD returns.

At the highest level, the benefits of professional financial planning broadly come from:

Lower taxes

• Lower product costs

• Better long-term investing outcomes

• Avoidance of major financial mistakes

• Behavioral discipline during market volatility

Depending on the situation, the potential value created can range between Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs annually.

And what are our fees? The fees for the above case would be as follows.

1. Comprehensive engagement with implementation support

Rs 75,000 to Rs 1 lakh annually

2. Lite engagement without implementation support

Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 annually

3. One-time consultation engagement over a 1 month period

  Rs 25,000

(18% GST applicable over and above the fees)

When viewed in perspective, the value created can far outweigh the cost of professional advice. This is true for any wealth levels starting from a beginner to a super wealthy.

The fees for each client family are as per the engagement level chosen and the wealth levels.

Our expertise currently caters to all of the segments below.

Young professionals

• Business owners

• Salaried employees

• Retirees

• NRIs

Sometimes, the biggest benefit of financial planning is not just wealth creation — it is peace of mind and the ability to focus on better things in life.

So, in true Maruti language:

Our engagement models aim not only better financial outcomes, but also better financial returns.
