Recently, we had an interesting discussion with a prospective client. He was an excellent saver and had accumulated a decent corpus over the years. On further probing, we realized this was achieved by cutting down significantly on expenses like family vacations and even occasional dining out with loved ones.
At the same time, he was extremely risk-averse, with large balances lying in savings accounts and fixed deposits.
Our guidance to him was very clear.
Prudent spending is an important part of personal finance.
Avoiding family vacations and small joys today can rob you of wonderful memories that can never be recreated. There is little meaning in accumulating large wealth when your children are no longer around to share your time, or when health begins to limit your ability to enjoy life.
At the same time, by simply reallocating one-third of his portfolio from highly safe, tax-inefficient banking products into well-chosen growth assets, his long-term returns could improve by 1–2% annually.
This seemingly small change could allow him to:
• Spend better
• Save a little less aggressively
• Invest in a more balanced and efficient manner.
The financial outcomes — and more importantly, the joy that comes with such balance — would far outweigh a strategy built on forced saving, low spending, and tax-inefficient low returns.
At Naveen Rego Capital, we believe:
• The highest returns come from being focused on one’s profession or business.
• Mental peace comes from spending quality time and money with loved ones and on one’s passions.
• Meanwhile, a well-allocated passive portfolio should quietly compound in the background.
So, earn well, spend well, save well, and invest wisely.
At the end of the day, we are emotional human beings. Our happiness cannot be measured by portfolio balances alone.
Happy Financial Planning!
