Last week, I was driving from Bangalore to Mangalore along with my daughter (by the way, the highway is excellent now). As we entered the ghat section, our car got stuck behind a slow-moving oil tanker. The road was narrow and full of sharp curves. Overtaking was simply not possible.
My little daughter, used to seeing me drive fast on open highways, grew restless.
“Dad, you were driving so fast before. Why is it so slow and boring now?” I smiled and told her,
“This is the way it has to be. On such roads, patience is safety. Once the road clears, we can go fast again.”
The lesson was simple:
Even if I have a powerful car, I must respect the road. Aggression, when the road demands patience, can be brutally fatal.
Isn’t this exactly how personal finances work?
Just because you are young, earn well, and understand markets, doesn’t mean you must always be aggressive with your investments.
There are phases in life, where going slow makes sense.
Where asset allocation matters more than speed.
Where patience protects you from irreversible mistakes.
Patience is perhaps the most underrated quality an investor can have.
It is rarely taught in schools, yet it is one of the most important traits in life and in wealth creation.
Construct your portfolio wisely. But for the results, have patience. High risk does not always mean higher returns.
Happy Financial Planning!
