“Market kya lagta hai?” — this is perhaps one of the most common questions you’ll hear among investors and market participants.
Having been part of this ecosystem for many years, I’ve been asked this question countless times.
My plain and honest answer remains the same — no one really knows!
And anyone claiming to know is either talking nonsense or an astrologer.
But here’s the real question — is this even relevant?
Why Market Predictions Don’t Matter as Much as You Think
As fiduciary financial planners, our focus lies elsewhere. Every individual and family have their own unique financial goals — some are saving for a child’s education, others for retirement, and some for creating a legacy.
In all these cases, the short-term market outlook — beyond the day-to-day noise — has very little to do with long-term success.
In fact, it often becomes a distraction from the real journey.
When financial goals are long-term, spanning years or even decades, the true risks lie elsewhere:
- Inflation, which silently erodes purchasing power
- Taxation, which can eat into returns
- Inadequate accumulation, which can leave one short of the required corpus to sustain future lifestyle
Getting distracted by short-term market chatter can derail the discipline and patience needed in a sound financial plan.
The Market Will Move — That’s Its Nature
The market will always move — sometimes sharply up, sometimes dramatically down. That’s what markets do.
What matters more is whether your portfolio is designed to handle these ups and downs while keeping you on track toward your goals.
Focus on What You Can Control
Instead of trying to predict what the market will do next, focus on what’s within your control:
- Define your financial goals clearly
- Build an asset allocation and diversification policy suited to your risk profile
- Review and rebalance your portfolio at least once a year
- Stay disciplined through market cycles — good or bad
And if you find this process confusing or difficult to navigate on your own, it’s worth engaging with a fee-only financial planner who is legally bound to act in your best interest.
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, it’s not about whether the market is right or wrong.
Because ultimately — Market toh sahi hai bhai. Kya aapka portfolio sahi hai?
Happy Financial Planning!
